Palo Alto Joe's A few years ago, Bruce introduced me to a wonderful restaurant in Palo Alto, right by the main Sun campus. I was suspicious: from the freeway, you can see the neon pink sign displaying its name. Maximum cheese effect. I was suspicious. Friends were suspicious. But I figured, I'm marrying Bruce, he's from New York, I'll trust his instinct on Italian food. Boy, am I ever glad I did! The dining room is peaceful and quiet (just ask for a table away from the bar) and the food is outstanding! Each day, they have a regular menu as well as a menu with specials of the day. Both are excellent. Great appetizers have included homemade gnocchi in tomato cream sauce and eggplant braised in balsamic garlic sauce. The entrees are equally as tempting, giving the customer a virtual tour of Italy. Choices include variations on beef, chicken, and fish as well as pastas dressed with the freshest produce of the day. Each time we've visited Joe's, chef Rick Vargas has come out to our table (as he does with all customers) to make sure that all is well. In fact, one time, he directed Bruce to a 'not on the menu' steak and seafood dish which was fantastic! Legend has it that the first time Bruce ate at Joe's with a bunch of friends, Rick came out to their table and asked if they'd like to try 'this new appetizer that he's been working on.' It's just that kind of place! Entrees range from about $10-20. I'm glad of that, because if it were any cheaper, I'd be there every day! I highly recommend trying this Bay Area culinary gem...
