Give me time, lots of time... but -- DON'T PENCIL ME IN

With apologies to the crafters of the lovely tune Don't Fence Me In.

People have their heads screwed on funny sometimes. Much of the time, their heads are tilted sideways, cradling a cell phone. But besides that, many in SillyCon Valley just have the wrong priorities!

I used to have several friends to hang out with, around here. Unfortunately the more sane ones have moved away. But for now, what about those left behind? Several of them, when I bring up the idea of getting together for dinner, pull out their calendar, when I get "penciled in" three or four weeks from the initial date. Argh!

Now, I can understand not having the most current weekend free, especially if I'm asking on Thursday or some other time close to the weekend. But with most people, more than 5-6 weeks' notice is required. And I'm being "penciled in"? This implies that I can be erased if something more important comes up. And this has happened.

On occasion I've taken the strategic tack of planning a get-together several weeks in advance, setting a date up to two months away. But this has bombed on me, too, where friends say "I don't know what's going to come up between now and then." Arrrrrgh! I can't win.

So if you're reading this, and you're one of the "offenders," you know who you are... and I know where you live! Bwa-ha-ha! Seriously, is work that important? I would hope not.
