Yeah, yeah. New Jersey has the bad rep. But I'm willing to admit there are
some likeable things in Jersey...
- Place to Eat: Hoagie Haven
Just as it stood 10+ years ago in my husband's college days, Hoagie Haven has
great sandwiches at cheap prices. (He says they haven't changed since '92!)
No seating available, carry-out only.
- Place to Eat: Winberie's
This place just feels cozy to me. And the food! Bruce introduced me to the
place on a Sunday morning, with extensive all-you-can-eat brunch at a
reasonable price. Famous for cheese fondue, but they have all sorts of food.
Kind of like Friday's, but more intimate.
- Place to Dessert: Thomas Sweet Ice Cream
Not too far from Hoagie Haven is a place that makes great homemade ice cream.
Then, take some of this ice cream, and have an item blended in by a curiously
rigged-up drill bit. Cold Stone Creamery doesn't hold a candle to this place!
The contraption they have grinds the added candy/cookie/whatnot into very timy
chunks and gives the ice cream a soft serve texture. And here... you can try
cardamom ice cream. Have you ever had that?
- Place to Shop: Princeton Record Exchange
One of my favorite used CD stores anywhere. I always spend a ton of money. It
isn't a huge store, but they get some interesting selections. And it's nice to
be able to get "something for nothing" in the middle of the frou-frou Palmer
Square boutiques.
- Place to Experience: Pennsylvania Dutch Farmers Market
Take Route 27 a few miles north of the Princeton campus, and you're in the town
of Kingston. Here, you'll find a gem of a farmer's market, complete with the
Amish! It's only open Th, F, Sat -- so be aware! Yummy homemade cookies,
fresh squeezed juices, all sorts of other great stuff. Come with an appetite!
